Elsie May Pomeroy (1886–1968) was a dedicated Canadian educator, author, and the official biographer of Sir Charles G.D. Roberts. according to primary biographical documents compiled by the University of Toronto. Over a thirty-five-year career, she influenced the teaching of Canadian literature in public schools and led prominent educational organizations across Ontario.

Early Life and Family

Pomeroy was born on November 20, 1886, in the village of Fullerton, Ontario. She was the eldest of six surviving children born to Richard Pomeroy and Susan Davis. Her father’s family originated in Devon, England, a heritage she later commemorated by designing a personalized bookplate featuring the ruins of Berry Pomeroy Castle. Despite experiencing a lifelong spinal curvature that caused chronic back problems, she remained physically sprightly and energetic throughout her adult life. After attending high school in Mitchell, Ontario, she completed her teacher training at the Normal School in Stratford.

Educational Career and Leadership

From 1914 to 1949, Pomeroy taught at King Edward Public School in Toronto, promoting Canadian poetry. She was active in professional organizations, leading the Women Teachers Association of Toronto (1926–1927) and the Toronto Council of Teachers (1930).

Relationship with Sir Charles G.D. Roberts

After meeting author Sir Charles G.D. Roberts in 1926, she began a long professional partnership, becoming his authorized biographer. Her book, Sir Charles G. D. Roberts: A Biography, was published in 1943. She was also active in the Canadian Authors Association (CAA), serving as Toronto branch president (1947–1950). She continued to advocate for his legacy following his death in 1943.

Later Years and Legacy

For over two decades, Pomeroy lectured on Roberts and curated memorabilia, which she donated to Mount Allison University. She destroyed her private correspondence with Roberts before her death in 1968.
